A drawer of inherited flatware, a tangle of chains, a bracelet nobody wears: at some point you want a number of your own before anyone at a counter offers you one. How much is sterling silver worth per gram is an easy calculation once you have two inputs, the fineness the 925 stamp claims and the live silver price. The part most calculator pages skip is what to do with the answer, because for a lot of silver jewelry the melt figure comes out small enough that melting the piece is the wrong move.

Sterling silver is 92.5 percent pure silver, so its melt value is the weight in grams multiplied by 0.925 multiplied by the current silver price per gram. Silver is quoted per troy ounce, and one troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, so divide the quoted spot price by 31.1035 to get the per-gram figure before you multiply.

What the 925 mark settles

A 925 stamp is a claim about metal content and nothing else: 92.5 percent silver, with the remaining 7.5 percent usually copper to make the alloy hard enough to wear. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, an item sold in the United States as “sterling” or marked 925 is expected to meet that fineness within the small testing tolerance the National Stamping Act allows, which is why it is the one number you can build a calculation on. The same standard sits behind British sterling hallmarking, set out by The Assay Office, so a lion passant or a 925 millesimal mark points at the same multiplier.

Silver is marked in several standards, and the number changes the multiplier you use:

Then there are the marks that mean no melt value worth calculating. EPNS, EP, A1, “silver on copper,” and similar plating codes describe a microscopic layer of silver deposited over a base metal, measured in fractions of a gram across an entire tray, and refiners do not pay for it. “Nickel silver” and “German silver” contain no silver at all despite the name. If your mark is one of those, the melt line is effectively zero and the piece is worth only what it is worth as an object. How much is sterling silver worth per gram: the formula

Melt value is what the pure silver content is worth at the market price, and it takes three inputs.

Melt value = weight in grams x 0.925 x silver price per gram

  1. Weight in grams. Use a digital scale that reads to a tenth of a gram, and weigh only the silver. The next section covers what has to come off first.
  2. The fineness factor. For sterling that is 0.925. Swap in the figure from the table above if the piece is marked differently.
  3. Silver price per gram. Silver is quoted per troy ounce. Divide the quoted spot price by 31.1035 to convert it to a per-gram price. Look this figure up on the day you calculate, because it moves every trading session, and never work from a number you saw in an article.

That last point is the one that separates a useful estimate from a stale one. The formula is permanent; the price in it is not.

A worked example, with the spot price left as a placeholder

Suppose the live silver price is S dollars per troy ounce. The per-gram price is S divided by 31.1035, and a sterling piece weighing W grams melts to W x 0.925 x (S / 31.1035).

Take a solid sterling bangle that weighs 40 grams once the safety chain and clasp are accounted for. That is 40 x 0.925 = 37 grams of fine silver. Multiply 37 by the per-gram price and you have the melt value.

Purely to show the shape of the result, and not as any kind of quote: if S were 30 dollars per troy ounce, the per-gram price would be about 0.96 dollars, and 37 grams of fine silver would come to roughly 36 dollars. Run the same math on a more typical piece of jewelry, an 8 gram chain, and 7.4 grams of fine silver lands near 7 dollars. Those two figures are illustrations of the arithmetic only. Replace S with the real spot price before you rely on anything.

Notice what the illustration shows even though the price is a placeholder. Sterling jewelry is usually light, and a light piece of a modestly priced metal produces a small number. That is the fact the rest of this article turns on.

What to leave off the scale

Everything you weigh that is not silver inflates your estimate, and buyers deduct it anyway. Take off or exclude:

  • Gemstones and pearls. Their weight is not silver, and their value is a separate question the International Gem Society and any working appraiser treat on its own terms. What stones contribute is covered in what makes jewelry worth more.
  • Non-silver components. Base-metal clasps, spring bars, steel springs, pin backs, earring backs, leather, cord, enamel, resin, and glue all add grams that are not silver.
  • Weighted and filled hollowware. This is the classic trap. Sterling candlesticks, knife handles, salt and pepper shakers, and trophy bases are frequently made as a thin silver shell around a core of pitch, plaster, cement, or rosin, and are often marked “weighted,” “reinforced,” or “cement filled.” The stamp is honest and the silver is real, but most of the mass is not silver. A reputable buyer pays only on the recoverable metal, and a set of weighted candlesticks that reads 900 grams on a kitchen scale may hold a small fraction of that in silver.
  • Anything you cannot see inside. Hollow beads, puffed hearts, and tube chains hold far less metal than their size suggests, so do not estimate them by eye. Conversely, a piece that feels implausibly heavy for its size probably has a filler core, and the scale reading is not silver.

If most of a piece is stones and settings, melt has stopped being the right tool and the question is what the finished object is worth.

Why a buyer pays under melt

Melt is a ceiling, not an offer. A refiner or scrap buyer has to melt the lot, assay it to establish actual fineness, separate the silver from its alloy metals, and carry the price risk between buying and reselling. Storefront, insurance, and staff come out of the same spread.

So buyers pay a percentage under melt, and there is no single fixed percentage to quote. It varies by the buyer, the type of business, and the lot size, with refiners and bulk buyers generally landing closer to melt than a walk-in counter taking a handful of chains. Two questions cut through it: what silver price are you using, and what percentage of melt are you paying? A buyer who will not answer both in writing is one to leave. Silver has one extra wrinkle gold does not. Because the per-gram value is low, fixed costs weigh proportionally heavier. Some buyers set a minimum lot size or a flat handling deduction, which can eat a meaningful share of a small parcel. Sending three chains across town is often a losing trade on time alone.

Melt, resale, and replacement: why scrapping designed silver loses money

Name the number you mean, because three different ones get quoted in the same conversation:

  • Melt value is the metal content at the current price, the formula above. It ignores who made the piece and how well.
  • Realistic resale value is what the piece fetches as a finished object on the secondhand market, from a dealer, a consignment seller, or a private buyer.
  • Retail replacement value is what it would cost to buy something equivalent new. It carries full retail markup, it is always the highest of the three, and it belongs on an insurance schedule rather than in a selling decision.

Here is the conclusion most silver calculators avoid. For gold, melt is often a fair proxy for what a plain piece is worth, because the metal is dense and expensive enough to dominate. For silver it usually is not. A sterling piece with a maker’s mark from a known silversmith, a recognizable design-house style, a hallmarked Native American maker, a period Art Nouveau or Art Deco design, or an intact flatware service in a collected pattern will very often sell for several times its melt figure. When a chain melts to single digits and the same chain sells for a multiple of that on the secondhand market, sending it to a refiner is not a cash-out, it is a loss.

That does not make melt useless. It is the right number for damaged, unmarked, unsigned, mass-produced sterling with no design interest, and it is the floor you check offers against so nobody talks you below it. Weigh the silver on a gram scale, deduct stones, clasps, and any weighted core, multiply by 0.925, and multiply that by the live silver price per gram (spot per troy ounce divided by 31.1035). That gives you a defensible melt estimate to hold offers against. Then look at the piece again before you act on it: read the marks, look for a maker, and ask whether the object is more interesting than the metal.
